Zoe Wees is definitely a young songwriter who isn’t given nearly as much appreciation as she deserves.
I first listened to Wees’ when she came up on my playlist suggestions and ever since then I’ve been obsessed! I love her music as it’s very easy to get lost in the lyrics and melody of her songs. The 20 year old German singer-songwriter, made her first appearance in 2017 when she auditioned for the German edition of The Voice Kids. Wees was unfortunately eliminated in the sing-off phase of the competition but that didn’t stop her from rising to fame. Her increase in popularity, despite her elimination from the competition, shows that being rejected from things is not necessarily always a bad thing. The Voice Kids gave Wees the platform she needed to begin her song writing journey allowing her to break into the music industry.
Zoe Wees was born in Germany and lives with BRE (Benign Rolandic Epilepsy) This is a condition that causes her to have feelings of helplessness and loss of control. It can also cause physical symptoms such as headaches, double vision and nausea. About her BRE, Wees’ stated in a Notion Magazine interview: ‘the sickness was stronger than me, and left scars that have become part of my life. Accepting them has taken so much time, but they make me what I am today: a fighter’
Wees uses this mindset of strength and acceptance to write songs that portray true and raw emotion.
She released her well known single Control in 2020 and has since had a very successful album entitled Golden Wings which was released in May 2021.
Wees’ music is raw and emotional. She writes about real life experiences that people go through everyday such as anxiety, depression and loss. Her songs Overthinking and Control perfectly capture the feelings and struggles of mental health-they are definitely the kind of songs that can be blasted out in your room when life gets a bit too much.
She also writes about loss and grief through her song Hold Me Like You Used To. She sings about the heartbreak and pain that comes with the loss of a loved one, something that she executes flawlessly. The lyrics and meaning behind the song are tear jerking-Wees doesn’t back away from telling the truth about painful life experiences through her music.
Her latest single Daddy’s Eyes was written about her own Dad. The lyrics ‘where the hell were you?’ and ‘I hate that I look like your daughter’ show Wees’ negative relationship with her father. Her lyrics come from a very deep, personal place making them something that listeners can relate to- Wees’ lyrics and music assure people that they aren’t alone with whatever it is they are feeling.
She has just finished a tour and hasn’t yet announced a new one for 2023. However, we can hopefully be expecting new music from her in the new year!
